Grant says Scott received the shot the day before and, about 12 hours later, suddenly clenched his fists, threw his head back and suffered a severe reaction. She says Scott was left a spastic quadriplegic, with major developmental and neurological disabilities. Grant says she later sued the manufacturer, Parke-Davis, but lost because she could not prove which company’s VX had actually been administered—the doctor had not recorded the manufacturer on Scott’s medical record. She testified that five medical experts who treated or examined Scott believed the DPT VX had caused his injury. One of the doctors on the program then made a remarkable admission: “I agree with Mrs. Grant that it probably was the pertussis VX that caused Scott’s awful problem.” He went on to say that a safer pertussis VX was needed and that the existing VX had changed very little in decades. The discussion then turned to informed consent — whether parents were being adequately warned about serious neurological reactions before their children were VX.
