1982 on the Phil Donahue Show, Emily Yankovic testified about what happened to her daughter, Abra, after receiving her second DPT VX at four months old. On the same day she received her second DPT, Abra began turning blue, shaking and showing signs of distress. Her parents rushed her to the emergency room and asked whether the VX could be connected, but she says they were told it appeared to be a choking incident. Two weeks later, Yankovic said Abra developed grand mal seizures and remained in critical condition for 48 hours. By the time of this interview, Abra was three and a half years old. Her mother said she sometimes experienced dozens — even hundreds — of seizures in a single day, was heavily medicated, and could not walk, talk or chew. Yankovic said one of the issues that angered her most was that she had never been told beforehand that serious adverse reactions were possible. “We were uninformed as parents.” She said parents should be given information about the potential risks of both the disease and the VX so they can make an informed decision for their own children.
