Treating Autism by treating the gut with diet and supplements
Dr. Jerry Kartzinel is a board-certified pediatrician and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics who has spent years treating children with autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
Dr. Kartzinel says he doesn’t define “curing” autism as changing who a child is. He describes it as helping a child move from being severely dysfunctional to being more functional — able to communicate, form friendships, attend school and live with less anxiety, pain and obsessive behaviour.
Dr. Kartzinel says chronic constipation, diarrhea and reflux are among the most common gastrointestinal problems he sees in autistic patients, and argues that these problems need to be addressed.
He also says that in his clinic, roughly 80% of the patients he treats improve dramatically after dietary changes. He specifically discusses removing gluten and dairy, saying some parents report improvements in hyperactivity, irritability, sleep and bowel function.
He discusses testing for nutritional deficiencies, gut bacteria, yeast, parasites and metabolic issues, along with targeted use of vitamins and supplements depending on the individual child.
These are Dr. Jerry Kartzinel’s clinical observations and treatment claims from the interview, not proof that these approaches work for every autistic child.
