Christopher, 31-year-old Canadian from Victoria BC, says he had never experienced heart problems before developing a sudden racing heart and high blood pressure about two months after his first CV VX.

Concerned it could be VX-related, he asked his doctor for an exemption from a second dose so he could travel abroad for cardiac testing rather than wait months for a Canadian cardiologist. Christopher says his doctor refused and told him that even if a cardiologist agreed he had reacted to the first dose, the Canadian medical approach would still be to recommend another dose.
When Christopher explained that VX rules prevented him from travelling to Washington State for private care, his doctor suggested he might still try crossing the land border, saying he had heard border officials were not necessarily enforcing the rules for truckers. Christopher responded that it was disturbing to be in a position where he effectively had to “sneak out of the country” just to obtain medical care.
After the travel restrictions were lifted, Christopher went abroad for testing. He says doctors found a slightly enlarged heart, a mitral valve leak and, later, that 4 of 17 heart segments were non-functional with an ejection fraction of 45%. He was told he could require lifelong heart medication and possibly a pacemaker.
