In four patients she followed longer-term, she says their bifidobacteria fell to almost zero and remained depleted for months. Hazan emphasizes that bifidobacteria play an important role in immunity. She also says her team observed breastfed newborns of VXed mothers with no detectable bifidobacteria, leading her to investigate whether spike protein could be involved. Hazan makes clear that this proposed mechanism is still a hypothesis requiring further research.
