About this video
More than four years after Switzerland ended its Covid certificate restrictions, prosecutors are now investigating one of the country’s biggest soccer stars over a VX certificate from 2022.
Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka is under criminal investigation over allegations he obtained a forged CV-19 VX certificate.
Xhaka says he mistrusted the VX and, while dealing with “worries and uncertainty,” obtained a certificate instead.
He now says it was a mistake and is cooperating with authorities.
There was no general VX mandate in Switzerland — but CV certificates were required for certain activities and international travel.
For an international professional athlete, that distinction was enormous.
Refusing VX could mean being unable to enter certain countries and therefore missing international competition — exactly what happened to Novak Djokovic, who missed major tournaments because VX requirements prevented him from entering countries where they were being played.
Xhaka chose to obtain a certificate instead.
Now, more than four years later — long after those restrictions disappeared — Swiss prosecutors are still investigating that decision.
