About this video

Jan 24 2006, a CBS News report highlighted research that found a major increase in flu VX among seniors — from about 15% to 65% — did not correspond with a reduction in flu deaths among the elderly. Researchers connected with the NIH reportedly expected to confirm that vaccination had reduced deaths, but instead found “the same disappointing result”: flu shots had not reduced deaths among seniors. One co-author, Dr. Tom Reichert, said he was “astonished” by the findings, and similar results were reported in Australia, France, Canada and the U.K. The CDC still recommended flu VX for seniors, saying it could reduce severity or prevent complications not captured in overall mortality numbers.
